Red Dead Redemption PC Review
Available Now
Version tested: PC
The PC version is equipped with next-gen upgrades such as DLSS, HDR and FSR3 to name a few, making PC the best platform to experience this classic!
Along with the fact we now have RDR on PC we also get the very popular Undead Nightmares expansion! For anyone that is not aware of what this DLC is it’s in my opinion better than the main game itself, you play Marston as an infected zombie that’s trying to save the new world. The option is there to jump straight into Undead Nightmares but I recommend you give the main story a run-through first.
On to the story. For those aware the main protagonist is John Marston, anyone who has played RDR2 will probably be very familiar with him. Arriving on a train you will soon be helping out a local called Bonnie protecting livestock from Coyotes, but it isn’t long before the good deeds end and John is back on the rougher side of things robbing and killing others to get by.
When you think RDR is 14 years old you have to appreciate the writing of the story and characters as well as the huge open world it had to offer back then, obviously, it isn’t on the same scale as its newer bigger brother but it is something to admire when you take its age into account.
One part of the game that doesn’t seem to have ages is the combat! Even now it feels fast, fluid and weighty. The dead eye feature is something I remember fondly and it has aged well! The ability to slow time to pull off multiple shots never gets old and doing this on a mouse and keyboard just feels perfect.
Graphically RDR has received a fair few improvements and does look good, faces have got a nice overhaul and the game environment looks great with lots of enhancements. The performance is always a worry with any game but playing on a 5800x and 7900XTX I was able to achieve a solid 144fps at 4k.
I also spent a fair amount of time playing handheld on the Legion Go, the game was very playable and ran smoothly at well over 60fps. Lossless scaling also helped if this is something you already have it’s worth the extra frames.
The sound throughout was fantastic with voice acting being very solid throughout. Sound effects and backing music feel very authentic and add to the immersion.
Verdict:
Red Dead Redemption is an easy recommendation for me to make, it is a classic and if you haven’t played it already you really should! If you have played it in the past I can still fully recommend you give it another go as this is the best way to now experience this classic. The performance and visual upgrades bring the game back to life in 2024 and the fact it includes the amazing Undead Nightmares DLC make it a must-play.
My only gripes are needing the Rockstar launcher even when brought on Steam and the price seems a little steep at £50 for a 14-year-old game.
Score:
8.6 / 10
